Dog Rescue Stories Bambi

The Inspiring Story of a tripod Lab mix and her long wait for a forever home.
I became the director of the
Stephens County Humane Society
, in Duncan Oklahoma back in April, 2009 and learned quickly about the black dog syndrome.
We started a Sponsorship program for two reasons. 1 - to help less adoptable dogs get adopted and 2 - to help families who really want a pet be able to afford one. It works very well. Our adoption fees are very low to begin with. We put $250-$300 dollars into each dog and only ask for $100.00 adoption fee. The adoption fee for our sponsored dogs drops down to only $25.00 for the new parents. I hesitate putting them up for free because people respect the decision a little more if they've invested some money into the animal.
Each black dog we have here at Stephens County Humane Society is sponsored in hopes of helping them find new homes. The 3 legged girl we call Bambi, is fully sponsored and still here. She’s been with us for more than a year and her story is an amazing one. The following is what our adoption page says about her:
Bambi was found outside our shelter as a "drop off" overnight about 15 months ago as a very young pup. Her left front leg was so mangled that it could not be saved.
We have a wonderful, supportive group called The Friends of the Humane Society which chose to sponsor all her surgeries and care as there was just something so special about this pup. Her determination was incredible.
She has been raised and fostered at June's house, one of the Friends members. June loves Bambi and has cared for her every need, but she realized that Bambi needs a family that can ultimately give her more. June's personal health limits her to what she can provide for such a young dog with a lot of healthy energy!
Bambi is wonderful with dogs and cats and children. In fact she would love to have a bunch of kids to play with on a daily basis. Nothing slows her down and she is such a happy dog! Exercise is a must and play time is a necessity.
She is spayed, current on all vaccinations, heartworm negative and housetrained. 16 months old. Contact the shelter with other question about Bambi. Fortunately, Bambi's adoption fee has been fully sponsored. Therefore, no money will be needed with her adoption, although donations are accepted and appreciated if possible. She really deserves a home that can care for her just the way she is and that means more than money.

We are extremely happy to report that after more than a year of waiting, Bambi received an early Christmas present and was adopted on Saturday, December 7, 2009. The young family that adopted her has 4 children, one of which has M.S, and a younger child with severe physical handicaps. The parents were looking for a wonderful dog, that was good with children and would fit in with their life. Bambi fit perfectly!
