Dog Rescue Stories
Roxie

submitted by Olivia Kief - age 14

After some begging and persistence, two sisters convince
Mom and Dad to add a second dog to the family.

In July 2009 it was very quite at my house in Morris, IL. In the last 3 months we had lost our two pet cats. We had a seven year old black lab. But since losing the cats, my little sister had been begging my parents for another dog, and of course, they weren’t budging.

After doing a lot of research, I found a rescue site called Rover Rescue. It is out of Aurora, IL. They have a lot of different dogs which are all in foster homes in the surrounding towns. Each time we asked our parents about going to look at one of the dogs at a foster home they would say “No”. Roxie was the perfect dog for Olivia and her family.

One day we found this pup that was Border Collie and Black Lab mix. She was adorable and her name was Liberty. We pretty much figured that we would not get a chance to meet her. We sent our Mom a picture of her on her cell phone while she was at work. We were surprised when we got a text message back that said, “Maybe”.

When she came home, we convinced her and our Dad to just go and meet her. When our family pulled into the driveway of the foster families home, I had a feeling that this dog was the one. When I first laid my eyes on her in the back yard, I fell in love with her. She was playing all by herself in the grass with a rope. She seemed to be the perfect dog.

The foster family said that she was found in Indiana, which happens to have a high stray dog rate. On the fourth of July, she wound up at a shelter. That was why they named her Liberty. There was no background on her. She was then taken to a different shelter where her foster family found her, adopted her, and put her on Rover Rescue. After hearing her story, we felt that our home would be a good place for her.

When we went to get in the car, she seemed very afraid. We calmed her down and the ride home was fine.

Roxie loves in her own way
After we had her a few days, we noticed that she did not respond when we called her Liberty. We then decided that we would change her name to Roxie. After a few days, we could tell she was reacting well to the new name.

It is obvious that she was not handled or loved as a little puppy. She does not care to be held, and prefers to go off by herself when we are not playing with her. She is especially afraid when a man raises his voice or when there is a loud noise. Roxie is not a cuddly type of dog and she will not let you hold her or sit on your lap. But she does love in her own type of way, based on trust Trust that you wont leave her behind like her old family did.

Roxie also will only sleep on the hard cold floor and we honestly don’t know were that came from. Roxie also loves water, she cant stay out of our pond in the summer. Roxy is also very good at tricks and Frisbee, she is a pretty smart dog!!

We are so happy that Roxie now has a loving happy home with us. She is so fun and looks funny with ears that are not in proportion to her head. Roxie has also helped our six year old black lab, Raven, stay young by being so playful, although sometimes she gets annoyed with her antics. Still, they are best of friends.

Roxie and Raven are the best of friends

Without Roxie, my life would be boring. I love her and cannot imagine life without our black dog.
