I Want to Adopt Puppies

Many people want to adopt puppies. Local shelters and rescue groups typically have many puppies to adopt. One of the reasons for this is that owners are not spaying or neutering their pets. Irresponsible dog ownership and backyard breeding leads to thousands of
unwanted litters of puppies
each year.
Everyone Loves a Puppy...
There is nothing cuter in the world than a puppy. Those cute faces and wagging tails and puppy kisses. Nothing is harder to resist than a puppy. However, when you have your heart set to adopt puppies, please consider carefully. Take a look around the shelter at all of the older dogs. They were all cute adorable puppies themselves once. Their previous owners fell in love with them too... when they were small bundles of fur.
Puppies are only puppies for a brief period of time… Then they grow up.
The Reality
Puppies will cost you more in their first year of life than an older dog. They require multiple visits to the vet for vaccinations and will need to be spayed or neutered once they are old enough. No matter how well you puppy proof your home a puppy will destroy something of value while growing and learning. A puppy will be much more likely to have accidents in the home and cannot be expected to “hold it” for more than 4 hours. Caring for a puppy can be much like caring for a young child.
Puppies are also a bit of an unknown. If you are getting a mixed breed puppy, how large he will get will be a bit of a mystery. Puppies are still learning and developing and it can be hard to know what they will be like as an adult. It is uncertain if the dog will be hyper or mellow, shy or exuberant. The way in which you raise your puppy will be a contributing factor to how he is as an adult, but genetics also play a role.
Unfortunately despite the constant campaigning of spay/neuter programs, thousands of unwanted puppies enter this world each year. Many of these puppies start their lives in shelters. As a result, there are plenty of puppies to choose from at your local shelter.
Because so many people fall in love and choose to adopt puppies, they are easier to find homes for and are adopted out quicker than the older dogs. Sometime adopters aren't able to see beyond the cute bundle of fur. They don't always see through the cuteness to understand the responsibility of bringing home that adorable puppy.
Puppies can certainly be a great deal of fun, but please make sure you are willing to take on the responsibility before falling in love. Remember that the adult dogs you see were all puppies at one point. They are just as deserving of homes as those cute little bundles of fur. Consider carefully. If you are not fully prepared for a puppy, an older dog that has been through the puppy stage may be a much better fit for you.
