Dog Abuse

How to recognize and prevent cruelty

Awareness is key to helping abused dogs

We have all seen the different news headlines about dog abuse. A couple of teens skinned a dog alive or beat a puppy to death simply because they were bored or curious.

These are acts done by a few sick and twisted individuals in our society today. These acts are a reflection of the lack of value placed on living things and a throw away mentality. Even though these stories make the headlines because of the horrifying nature of these acts, some dog abuse happens simply because the owner has not been educated on how to properly care for the animal. Sadly, much abuse and cruelty goes unnoticed and unrecognized by the general public.

Animal Hoarding results in the news story about hundreds of cats found in an old woman’s apartment or 80 dogs living in a one room cabin. Animal hoarding is a mental disorder that afflicts some people. Those that suffer from this condition, typically have the best of intentions when they bring home their first dog and even their second and third dog. However animal hoarders end up keeping huge numbers of animals that are forced to live in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions.

Pit Bull Fighting and other animal fighting has become commonplace in the headlines. Michael Vic’s case brought national attention to the problem. Pit Bull fighting is also highlighted on nearly every episode of Animal Planet's "Animal Cops". Pit Bull fighting has led to the destruction of millions of animals. The pit bulls reputation has been severely scarred by the abused dogs behavior and the negative media attention. Cities across the nation are banning pit bulls and other breeds that have been labeled aggressive or dangerous.

Puppy Mills and Puppy Farms are an embarrassing and sad part of our current society. Puppy farm owners do not view the dogs as pets or even living beings that need to be cared for. There is no consideration for the welfare of the animals and they have no interest in bettering a particular breed. The dogs are forced to live their lives in tiny wire cages in unsanitary and despicable conditions. The sole purpose of a puppy farm or puppy mill is to produce large numbers of puppies the cheapest way possible to maximize profits.

Other Forms of Dog Abuse

Backyard Breeding
is one of the most common forms of cruelty today. There are nearly 9 million dogs killed each year in the United States because there are not enough homes to place them in. Each puppy that is born in a planned or unplanned litter also needs to find a home. For each puppy that is sold by a backyard breeder, a shelter dog or puppy loses his chance at a forever home. Shelters are overflowing with wonderful dogs and puppies that deserve a second chance. Many of these dogs never get that second chance and are euthanized because too many puppies are being born each year.

Tethering or chaining your dog
in the back yard is unfortunately an acceptable form of abuse for many in our society. Dogs are pack animals that need to be well socialized in order to successfully live with humans. A dog that is left alone in the backyard is much more likely to become an aggressive dog. It's quite easy for owners to forget about a dog that lives outside and the dog gets neglected. Outside dogs are much more likely to suffer from embedded collars, malnutrition and other health related issues as a result of this neglect.

Education and Awarenes

Education on responsible dog ownership is vital to prevent dog cruelty and dog abuse. When adopting a dog, please be informed on the various forms of animal abuse so you can understand the types of conditions the dog may have been forced to endure. Learning about your dogs history will help you understand the potential baggage your dog may have when you bring him home.

Abused dog behavior varies greatly. Each dog will react differently and each dog will have different long term affects. The good news is that dogs live in the moment and can be rehabilitated rapidly. Your dog is capable of forgetting his past and will soon be thriving in his new home.
