Dog Training Hand Signals
Amaze Your Friends by Effectively Communicating with your Dog.

Learning and using dog training hand signals is the best way to communicate with your dog when teaching basic obedience.
Dogs are capable of learning verbal commands and you will incorporate the verbal commands with the hand cues during training. However, you will find that dogs respond to your energy and physical presence much more than your voice.
When using the following signals, be sure to be consistent with which hand you use. It does not matter if you use your right or left hand, so long as you and your family are all using the same hand and the same signal.
Sit
When asking your dog to sit, place your palm up with fingers and thumb together.

Down
When asking your dog to lie down, place your palm down with your fingers and thumb together. Make a pushing down motion with your hand.

Stay
When asking your dog to stay, bend your wrist with your thumb and fingers together and your palm facing away from you. Think of a policeman saying “halt”.

I have found that I have gotten even better results using the hand signals when I combine the visual cue for the dog while visualizing in my mind what I want the dog to do. When training, be sure to stand tall, remain positive and visualize the end result. It will at times feel as if the dog is reading your mind. Your dog is picking up on your energy and body language.
Once you begin to use the hand signals, they will become second nature to you. You can determine a hand signal for every command that you teach your dog. Consistancy is the key. You will effectively communicate with your dog and your friends will be amazed that you can control your dog without ever saying a word.
