Large Dog Rescue

Why a Large Dog is the Perfect Companion for Many Families.

Large dogs make great additions to many families.

Large dog rescue organizations are plentiful. A large dog is generally considered to be a dog over 50 lbs. There is still a wide range of sizes. You can find dogs from 50 lbs to nearly 200 lbs in some of the giant breeds. Many of these dogs will make exceptional pets for families with young children.

Small Dogs and Small Children.

A common misunderstanding is that smaller dogs are better suited for families with young children. However, small dogs (under 25 lbs) are more fragile and can be injured easily by young children.

Many of the smaller dogs can tend to be frightened easily. Others may bond too closely with one member of the family. They can become possessive and may snap at other members while trying to protect their “master”.

Because of these small dog traits, the larger dogs are sometimes the best fit for families with small children.

Labrador Retrievers.

Homeless Black Dog at Utah Human Society click here for more information The most popular breed of dog in the United States is the Labrador retriever. The lab is a large dog ranging in size from 50 to 100 lbs. Large dog rescue organizations are very familiar with labs. Because of their popularity and numbers, many labs and lab mixes are found at your local shelter.

Because Labrador Retrievers are so popular they are easy to find. People fall in love with that cute 8 lb puppy and may not realize that he will grow up to be a large dog. Rescue volunteers also see many of these dogs surrendered between the ages of one and two years old. Owners that do not understand the breed can become frustrated with the dog. They may not have thought the decision through at the time they brought home that cute little puppy.

Labrador Retrievers stay in the puppy stage much longer than most other breeds. A lab can have the energy level and chewing habits of a puppy for the first 2 or even 3 years of their life. Some owners are not prepared for an 80 lb puppy. Some may not have a fenced yard or ability to walk the dog. For a variety of reasons, Labs are the most popular breed of dog in the U.S. and are the most common dog in shelters.

The good news is that many times, the original owner has dealt with the most difficult years and the labs at your local shelter may just be entering their prime. This means that you get a dog that can quickly become a perfect member of your family. You get a lab that has finally moved out of the puppy stages and is ready to settle down and be your greatest companion.

Large Dogs for Families

Another commong misconception about large dogs is that they are large bundles of energy that create chaos in a home. This is not true for many of the large dogs. In general, large breed dogs will be energetic outdoors, but are content to snooze and watch a movie with you indoors. They can make wonderful indoor companions.

For a variety of reasons, the best dog for many families is a large dog. Large dogs are plentiful and easy to find at your local shelter. Please consider the larger dogs when looking for your new family member.
