Black Dog Walk

Walk for a Cause... Save a Dog!

JOIN THE PACK!

This page is dedicated to current and future Ogden Utah Black Dog Walk pack members. These pack members are an amazing group of dedicated volunteers that are making a tremendous difference.

The black dog walk is a wonderful way to socialize and exercise your dog and meet other dog lovers in Utah. By walking black dogs on a regular basis, the black dog walk brings awareness to Black Dog Syndrome and helps to change the odds for homeless black dogs.

This is the walk where it all began... The Ogden Black Dog Walk began on Saturday, September 19, 2009 with myself, my mother, my 2 daughters and our 2 dogs. This walk has grown rapidly thanks to a tremendous group of dedicated volunteers.

The Ogden Black Dog Walk pack leaders have formed a unique and special relationship with the Ogden City Animal Shelter. Each week, volunteers are able to walk the dogs from the shelter and get them noticed. Adoption rates have increased and the pack has received tremendous support from the community and local businesses. Many dogs lives have been saved thanks to the work of the Ogden Black Dog Walk pack members.

Grab the leash, get your dog or borrow your friends dog, get your t-shirt (not required) and join the pack!

WALK UPDATES

September 11, 2010 Hello awesome pack members!

Wow! What a great walk! We had eight dogs, and two got adopted. The Humane Society took three for their booth: Penny, a precious 2-month old red female Pit Bull mix; Balto, a handsome 2-year old white male German Shepherd; and Kovu, a black 8-year-old Pomeranian. We had five dogs on the walk: Maya, a beautiful, awesome 1-year old tan Pit Bull mix; Adrian, a very people friendly brindle 1-year old female Pit Bull mix; Cammi, a beautiful black and gray 6-month old female Australian Shepherd/Lab mix; Solly, an awesome, mellow 3-year old Yellow Lab mix; and Maggie, a beautiful, 4-month old white female Pit Bull mix (Kovu and Cammi were the only black dogs in the shelter). Penny and Kovu are the two that were adopted. We had lots of interest in the others, and hope that they will soon have a forever home also.

We saw Dan, the young man who adopted Shrek, the Mastif/Pit that was adopted from the walk last week. He said that he is doing great, and his female Pit thinks he is pretty awesome also. He has changed his name to Surly, and he will be the shop dog at the Bike Collecter.

We also saw the couple who adopted Blue two weeks ago. He seemed so glad to see us, and they said that he is doing really well.

It is so gratifying to see the success stories, and you all are the reason we are seeing these successes.

The Ogden Shelter is using one of the beds that we made; South Ogden Shelter is using two of the beds, and I am taking the others to Weber County Shelter and the Animal Park.

Sadly, we lost our profile dog, Pixie, to kennel cough. We didn’t get a chance to take her on the walk because the shelter was closed last week. My heart is broken again. I wish we could somehow negotiate a deal with local vets to help care for these precious dogs when they get the dreaded kennel cough.

It is always sad when we lose any of these precious dogs, but I want to focus on the great good you are all doing. We are seeing dogs getting adopted by wonderful caring people who will give them loving homes.

I talked with Bob at the Ogden Shelter, and he said that they will be open into October because there have been a couple of delays in the construction at the Weber County facility. So he said to just plan on walking dogs from Ogden until they transition, which will be at least until mid October.

FYI. I spoke with someone in the Ogden City Council office and asked about the Council meeting that was rescheduled regarding a proposed Pit ordinance in Ogden. She said that it will be a working session following the regular Council Meeting September 28. The regular Council meeting starts at 6:00, so I can only guess when the work session will start. She said that the session will be an information gathering opportunity and the public is invited. They have also invited Best Friends and another group to share information about Pits.

Thanks again to all of you, and have a great week, and we will see you next Saturday at the Shelter. - Loa

September 3, 20101 Hi, I just learned that Vianne, alias Carmella, got adopted today from the Animal Park. What great news! She went from being in danger of being put down to having a loving home because the Animal Park took her in and gave her a second chance. Thanks J.J. and Debbie! You are awesome!

Here is the flyer about our participation in the Harvest Moon event Saturday September 25. It will be in the afternoon, 12:00 to 5:00. We probably won’t walk dogs in the morning, so please let me know if you will be available that Saturday afternoon, and what time. We will need walkers and someone at the booth. We will have two opportunities to give brief descriptions of our dogs on the stage near Union Station, so it will be a great opportunity to showcase the dogs that we have that day.

September 2, 20101 Hello to you all, This is an update on our walk this Saturday. The shelter will be closed, so we won’t be walking dogs from the shelter. We are working with fosters and rescues to see if they want to bring their dogs for the Walk, so I will keep you posted.

The shelter has all Pit Bulls except for a Boxer and Chihuahua, and there will be three more Pits available for adoption Friday. Since we aren’t going to be able to take them for a walk, Jen and Karissa are going to help take pictures of them Friday afternoon, and we will make mini profiles of all of them to post them on KSL. The rescues aren’t very willing to take Pit Bulls, so I am thinking that we need to go the extra mile to try to help. Thanks Jen and Karissa! If anyone else wants to join us for the photo shoot, you can meet us as the shelter Friday at 2:00.

There is one black Pit Bull, and she will be our profile dog for the Black Dog website. I have included her flyer as well as a smaller file that could be posted on Facebook. She is a cutie, so let’s try to help her get a second chance.

We might get together to “build” some PVC raised dog beds to donate to the Ogden Shelter and South Ogden Shelter. We could even meet at the Humane Shelter booth Saturday morning to do this activity. They don’t take very long to make, and it would be a great benefit for the dogs. Please let me know if you would be interested and available Saturday for this activity.

FYI. South Ogden Shelter is sponsoring a “Shots N Suds” Saturday September 11 from noon to 4:00. I have attached that flyer also in case you are interested.

Thanks, and have a great Friday! -Loa

September 1, 20101 Hi, I have good news from the shelter. New Beginnings and Humane Society of Utah rescued 11 dogs today. That is Great! They will continue to work with the shelter to rescue as many as they can before they close. -Loa
September 1, 20101 Dear Lucky, You touched our lives, and we will forever remember your energy and love of life. You didn’t have the best start in life. You were given to a little boy who loved you dearly, but the grownups in the house didn’t, and they let you run around the neighborhood. You did your best to win their love, but it just didn’t work out. A caring neighbor recognized that you needed some help, and she brought you to the shelter, hoping that you would have a second chance at a loving home. Even with all you have gone through, you only showed us your youthful energy and love of life. When we took you on the Black Dog Walk, a young man fell in love with you, and said he was going to adopt you. Alas, his landlord made it impossible for that to happen. I stopped by the shelter Monday to take some pictures of you and get to know you better. We had a great time! You touched my heart! I sent your picture out to our loving volunteers in hopes that we could find you a loving home, but today I learned that you were put down because you got kennel cough. My dear Lucky, we had hoped to change your luck. Your short 6 months of life wasn’t the best, but you made a difference in our lives. You didn’t know what might happen to you when you came to the shelter, you just saw everyone as a friend, and we will forever remember you as the little black dog who, like so many other black dogs, didn’t get that second chance to share their love. You did for us. You will always be in our hearts.

Love, the Black Dog Walk Pack

August 30, 20101 Hello to you all! I hope that you had a great weekend. We had a small pack Saturday, but a successful pack. We had Blue, a 10-month old male black Lab mix; Diamond, a 6-month old female Border Collie mix; Apollo, a 2-year old male Mastif/Lab mix; and Rusty, a 2-year old male Red tick hound (with a wonderful voice). A great couple who are in the Air Force and just moved here a month ago saw Blue and said he was the one for them. They had a black Lab who died, and they have been looking to adopt one since they moved to Utah. They followed us back to the shelter and adopted Blue. He never had to go back into the kennel! He is going to have a wonderful life. Everyone fell in love with Diamond, also, and we hope the she and Apollo and Rusty will soon be as lucky and Blue. Our wonderful volunteers from the Humane Society of Northern Utah kept Apollo and Rusty at their booth, and they were both big hits. The HSNU are wonderful supporters, and we are really enjoying combining efforts with them, and sharing time at their booth after the walk.

Blue has been our profile dog on the Black Dog Rescue Project website, so it is great to be able to tell the world that we saved another black dog. Lucky, who is a 6-month old lab mix is going to be our new profile dog. We thought one of the vendors was going to adopt him a week ago, but his landlord required a $500 deposit, so he couldn’t afford to adopt him. Lucky was found wondering in the street by a neighbor who knew where he lived. She took him back to the owner and reminded them that they needed to keep him in their yard or on a leash. The owner said that they didn’t care, and didn’t want the dog in the first place; it had been a gift for her grandson. The neighbor left the dog with them, and soon found it wandering in the street again. When she took it back this time, the owner said, “Just put him down! I don’t want him!” So the neighbor brought Lucky to the shelter. He is a wonderful, energetic little dog, who will make someone a wonderful companion. He doesn’t appear to know any commands, but will be a quick learner. I hope that we can change Lucky’s luck this week.

You are all making a wonderful difference every day! Thank you so much! - Loa

August 21, 20101 Hello you wonderful volunteers! You are awesome, and our walk today was super. We had a lot of interest in the dogs, and many opportunities to share what we are all about. We had a great pack with nine dogs: Lucky, a 6-month-old black lab; Blue, a 10-month-old black lab; Tango, a 2-year-old Border Collie; Carmella, a 2-year-old Chesapeake Bay Retriever/Chow Chow mix; Rusty, a 2-year-old Redtick hound; Gus, an 8-year-old Pug; Shadow, an 8-year-old Golden Retirever; Chato, a 4-year-old Golden Retirever; and Snowball, an 8-year-old Minature Poodle. I know, we are the Black Dog Walk, and there were only three black dogs. Well, I think we are doing a great job of showcasing the dogs in the shelter, and you did it again today. Gus, Shadow, and Snowball were adopted. We thought that Lucky was going to be adopted, but the young man who was interested didn’t come to the shelter to adopt him. Maybe he didn’t have time today. Carmella went to the Dog Park to be fostered. The Dog Park is at 840 W. 24th Street, and is a boarding/ grooming facility. Please stop by and let them know how much we appreciate their support.

August 16, 20101 Hello to you all, I just wanted to give you an update on adoptions from the shelter for the dogs that we have walked. Along with Houdini and Petunia who were adopted or rescued over the weekend, Jagger, Rocky, and Nikki were adopted today, in fact, Rocky and Nikki (the 4-month old brother and sister) were adopted together, which is great. Charlotte, from a week ago, was rescued. Just wanted to let you know.

August 15, 20101 Hi! What a great walk Saturday! Thanks for all your help. Chloe decided to start her Happy Birthday with the walk. Thank you, Chloe. You are an awesome volunteer, and we hope the rest of the day was as great as the morning.

We walked 11 dogs, and one got adopted and another rescued. The Humane Society of Northern Utah took a dog for their booth, which ended up being next to Swag the Dog Boutique booth. That worked out great, since we will be working with them for the Harvest Moon event in September. Houdini, the Shelty that the Humane Society took, was adopted right after the walk. Just as we were ready to take the dogs back to the shelter, a lady said she wanted to adopt Petunia, and we all cheered. She wanted to take her home then, but we couldn’t do the adoption at the park, so we gave her the information about where the Shelter is located. Komaldevi walked her and Petunia back to her car, and everything seemed like a go. But alas, she never showed up to adopt Petunia. We had a backup plan, and Komaldevi went the extra mile Sunday to take her to Salt Lake City for a temperament test to be rescued by Pet Samaritan. Thank you, Komaldevi, for your dedication and extra effort in helping these wonderful dogs. There was a lot of interest in the dogs, and we are hoping for more adoptions this week. July 17, 20101 Thanks to all the volunteers and especially Komaldevi; she organized the parade and walk and did a great job; following is her update:

Thank you all for your great work and time today. It was a little more hectic than usual, with the children’s parade and farmers market, but with everyone's help, we made this a great day for the shelter dogs. Thank you. I think today we had the largest group (17 people), we got all black dogs out on the walk. Great job everyone. After the walk, I went back to 25th street to hand out the dog flyers at the bike store and the coffee shop; I also asked other local businesses to post the flyers.

June 2, 2010 Hello to you all, I hope you all had a great Memorial Day weekend.

We had a good walk Saturday, and enjoyed a little sprinkle just as we rounded the corner at the theater. That seems to be our spot to encounter rain. Sherri was with us, and presented certificates of appreciation to the businesses who support the Black Dog Walk (Grounds for Coffee, Kiesel Coffee and Cocoa, Color Me Mine, and Moore’s Barber Shop). Casey, from the Shelter, also joined us with her amazing Doberman.

After the walk, we met at the Greenery for lunch and to wish Sherri and Angela and Bryanna the best in Denver (they left Sunday morning, and we are lonesome, but glad that they are together again as a family). Sherri presented certificates of appreciation to the pack members in attendance. I know I say this every week, but you all are awesome!

Our profile dog, Blue, was taken back by his owners, and they will try to find a home for him (he was brought to the shelter because his owners had three dogs and Animal Control made them give up one because they can only have two). He is a wonderful dog, and we are grateful that they came to his rescue and hope that they are successful in finding a good home for him. I will see you Saturday. Have a great week. - Loa

May 26, 2010 I want to tell you again how much I appreciate you all. We had a small pack Saturday, but it was a fun black dog pack. Neka, the Border Collie mix, and JD (the Mastiff puppy) were adopted. We were able to save Jessa by taking her to the Utah Humane Shelter today. Sherri and the girls adopted Hurley, and will be taking him to Colorado Sunday. We were surprised to see Little Bear back, but he got adopted again Monday. Let’s hope this one is his forever family.

We have a holiday weekend coming up, and I hope you all have a wonderful, safe time. The shelter will be closed Saturday and Monday, but we are still planning on the walk Saturday. If you can join us, we will plan on gathering at the Greenery after the walk to wish Sherri and Angela and Bryanna the best as they make their final move to Colorado.

Dan and Sarah, we hope your dog is doing ok.

Life is great with each precious life that is saved. Thank you all! - Loa

Donations needed for Mugsey! Mugsey Got Much Needed Help! It was hard to tell just what Mugsey was when he arrived at the shelter. He was extremely matted and dirty, he had an odor that wasn't pleasant and he ducked away from any approaching hands because of what we soon learned to be severe ear infections. In his current state, there was no hope for Mugsy.

But one of our faithful pack members, Nicole has a soft spot for Cocker Spaniels (yes, that what Mugsey is under all of that mess!). She made some phone calls and pulled some strings and freed Mugsey from the shelter. After grooming and a vet visit, she is now fostering Mugsey until a forever home can be found. Four Paws, a local rescue group in Logan Utah, paid for his care despite already being on a tight budget.

From Nicole...

We are trying to come up with a better name, because Mugsey isn't really inviting. But he got into the vet yesterday and they had to sedate him to flush out his ears, and they said that he had infection behind his eardrum on his right side, and that they were both really bad, and while they had him under they happened to look in his mouth and discovered that he had a crushed molar so they pulled that.

So now he has to be on oral antibiotics for the next 3 weeks for his tooth, but mostly his ears, and I have to wash his ears once a day and medicate them twice for the next 2 weeks! It sucks that people neglect their pets, and then rescue groups have to pay to fix them back up.

This did cost a lot and Lisa (who runs Four Paws of Logan) works very hard to take in all of the dogs she can. They run on a skeleton budget because most of their dogs are black older dogs that need medical care, or clog up the system because they aren't the cute and cuddly dogs people look for. So she really struggles to keep taking these dogs in and finding them good homes and it was really a stretch for her to take in Mugsey.

Any donations (food, toys, blankets, leashes, especially cash) makes a world of difference! She definitely does not waste any of her resources. Also if anyone has extra crates, she's short on those as well. And they do handle cats if anyone has extra stuff or food around the house for them as well.

Monetary donations can be sent to P.O. Box 422 Millville, UT 84326. Or you can contact Nicole via email at nicoledavewed@yahoo.com to coordinate. Click here to visit Four Paws of Logan Utah.

Thank you Four Paws. Thank you Nicole. and Thank you to everyone who is able to donate to support them. You are all awesome!

May 15, 2010 Thanks again for your time and efforts Saturday and every day. Those who came Saturday went the extra mile, literally. Because of the marathon and road closures, we questioned if it would be worth our time to walk downtown because it took extra time to walk the dogs from the shelter to the cars but your efforts paid off.

The following dogs have either been taken in by a rescue/foster or adopted:

Aphrodite, Marshall the Basset,Camella the Pomeranian mix, Chocolate the little brown Pit Bull, Mugseythe Cocker with the dread locks. Mugsey got shaved today, and looks and acts like a different dog. He is about 1/3 the size he was Saturday. One of our super volunteers, Nicole, made arrangements for a rescue shelter to take him to a vet to have his ears treated, and then she is going to foster him.

Wow! What amazing volunteers you all are. Thank you soooo much for your dedication - Loa
