Rescue Me Updates
2009

Dog Adoption Follow-Up for Our Profiled Black Dogs

The "Rescue Me" section of the Black Dog Rescue Project began in July 2009. The profiled dogs at black dog rescue project are typically at high risk for being euthanized if permanent loving homes are not found quickly. When we profile a dog, we are always hopeful that exposure will improve the dogs chances of finding a forever home, but at the time we post the profile, we have no way of knowing what the outcome will be.

In 2009, Black Dog Rescue Project profiled 16 black dogs that were all in desperate need of new homes. 13 of these dogs were adopted and now get to live out their happily ever after.

Unfortunately, 3 of the dogs stories ended before they were able to find new homes. The lives of these 3 dogs ended much sooner than they should have.

I have had the privilege of meeting the vast majority of dogs that are profiled here and I've fallen in love with each of them. I am heartbroken when we lose a dog and wonder each time we lose one, how we could have possibly prevented the tragic outcome.

Each one of the dogs profiled has left a paw print on my heart and I hope that their stories will inspire more people to adopt their next furry companion.

My biggest hope of all is that some day there will no longer be tragic endings, only happy ones. Until that day arrives, we will continue to profile these wonderful dogs in need in, and Black Dog Rescue Project will continue to save lives, one dog at a time.

Following are the stories of the Rescue Me dogs profiled in 2009.

Welcome Home Hugo!

RESCUE ME
Welcome Home Hugo!

Kurt, a single man from the Ogden area, was looking for a companion and came to the Ogden Shelter yesterday. December 22nd. He met several of the dogs and spent some time with Hugo. He then decided to go home and sleep on the decision. He was unable to get Hugo out of his mind and was back at the shelter first thing this morning to bring Hugo home just in time for the Holidays. Thank you Kurt, we are certain that Hugo will be forever grateful.

Merry Christmas and Welcome Home Hugo!

Welcome Home Bolt!

RESCUE ME
Welcome Home Bolt!

Bolt has not yet been officially adopted, but he is safe. A worker at the shelter has fallen in love with Bolt and has promised to give him a home if no one else falls in love with him before his time is up. He is still available for adoption at the shelter, so please stop by and see this wonderful dog. He might just be the perfect dog for your family, and by adopting Bolt, one more dog can be saved.

We will update his story when he is in his forever home.

UPDATE We received the following email shortly after Bolt found his forever family...

Just wanted to let you know that my spouse and I adopted Bolt from the Shelter on Saturday, December 12th. Thus far we have been really impressed with what an awesome dog he his. We can't wait to see what he'll be like once he settles into the routine at our house. We've changed his name to "Humboldt". Humboldt joins our other dog who also happens to be a black lab mix who we adopted from the Jackson Hole Animal Shelter three years ago. Her name is Nika and she and Humboldt are getting along really well. They are having a lot of fun running around in the new snow and going for long walks. We'll send a picture in a few weeks of the dogs together having fun. Thanks for the web-site as it helped us connect with our new canine companion.

Welcome Home Dash!

RESCUE ME
Welcome Home Dash!

A young father decided that this Christmas would be the right time to give his daughter her first dog. On Saturday, December 5, 2009, they both stopped by the shelter to find the right match for their home and fell in love with Dash.

Your first dog forever holds a special place in your heart. There is something magical about the bond between a young child and a dog. We are very happy that dash will be that special dog for this young girl and know that Dash will be adored and showered with love in his new home. Welcome Home Dash!

In Loving Memory...

In Loving Memory...

We are sad to report that Daisy became very stressed in the shelter. She was always the sweetest girl with people, but after some time in the shelter, she became dog aggressive and was no longer suitable for adoption. Daisy was humanely euthanized on November 30, 2009.

When grieving the loss of Daisy, it is easy to get angry with the shelter. Many will think that more should have been done to try and save her. However, this is misguided anger.

The truth is that there are simply more dogs in America than we have homes for. In addition to the dog overpopulation problem, not all of the homes that dogs are currently in, are loving and caring homes. Dogs are dumped in neighborhoods like trash, when they are no longer wanted by their families. They are brought to the Shelter because owners have a new baby, or because their owners bought new carpet or remodeled the home or even because they are having relatives come home for the holidays and don't want to hassle with the dog. If everyone treated their dog like a family member and everyone spayed or neutered their dog to prevent unwanted litters of puppies, the shelters would soon be empty.

Many owners are loving and responsible dog owners. But, as long as there are owners that are irresponsible, our local shelters will be full. No shelter is an ideal place for a dog. The dogs are surrounded by other barking dogs. Stranger's parade passed them each day. They can sense the death that happens. They can smell the bodies being cremated. Many times they come to the shelter with a tragic past. Each dog entering a shelter copes with the stress differently.

For those that work in shelters and see the loss on a daily basis, it is a difficult, emotional, and often thankless job. They continue their work because they are passionate about the animals in their care and know that despite the tragic endings for some, there are also wonderful happy endings for others.

The shelter is not to blame for the loss of our sweet Daisy. Someone allowed her to wander the streets and didn't care enough to come and find her when she was lost. This unknown person that allowed Daisy to end up in the shelter is the one to blame for her death.

Our hope is that Daisy's story will help people understand the tragic ending for many dogs that end up in shelters across the United States. And our hope is that Daisy's story may cause more people to be more responsible dog owners.

Welcome Home Annabell!

RESCUE ME
Welcome Home Annabell!

Annabell found her special people! A mother and her two children came to the shelter on Saturday and fell in love with our sweet Annabell. We know she will be dearly loved. This special dog now has a home to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. Welcome Home Annabell!

Welcome Home Billie Jean!

RESCUE ME
Welcome Home Billie Jean!

The Rescue Me dogs at Black Dog Rescue Project are finding new homes and awareness about Black Dog Syndrome is beginning to spread. As soon as the shelter opened today, November 12, 2009, a woman came in looking for her first dog and fell in love with Billie Jean. We are sure the two of them will be the best of friends. Welcome Home Billie Jean!

In Loving Memory...

Unfortunately, shortly after being adopted, it was discovered that Billie Jean had an advanced case of Heart Worms. It was decided that it would be in her best interest to humanely euthanize her. Sweet Billie Jean will be dearly missed. Another lesson to be learned. An inexpensive monthly heartworm preventative would have allowed this girl to avoid a tragic ending.

Welcome Home Abby!

RESCUE ME
Welcome Home Abby!

On November 10, 2009, Abby went to her forever home. We are so very happy that this sweet and wonderful dog did not have to wait very long to find her new family. We know that she will be loved and will bring much joy to everyone around her. Welcome Home Abby!

Welcome Home Lea!

RESCUE ME
Welcome Home Lea!

Lea is a very special dog and a very lucky dog. The day after we profiled Lea on our site, we took her with us on our Black Dog Walk in Ogden, UT. We met a wonderful couple that fell in love with Lea. They were looking for a companion for their border collie and Lea made a great impression on them. Within a couple of hours, Lea was out of the Shelter and in her forever home. Welcome Home Lea!

In Loving Memory...

In Loving Memory...

Today, November 6, 2009, Sanso ran out of time and was euthanized. I am heartbroken because no one was able to see anything but the stereotype of Sanso's breed. No one was able to see that Sanso was a happy dog with a zest for life and a kiss for everyone. No one was able to see that this handsome fellow had tremendous potential. No one was able to see that he would have been a wonderful friend and companion.

Dogs with black coats are the hardest color of dogs to find homes for. Pit Bulls are the hardest breed to find homes for. Black Pit Bulls face tremendous odds. Unfortunately, Sanso was not able to beat those odds.

Sanso, you have left a paw print on my heart. I'm so sorry that we were unable to find you a forever home and that your life was cut so short. Sweet, loveable Sanso, I will forever remember your happy kisses.

Welcome Home Henry!

RESCUE ME
Welcome Home Henry!

October 20, 2009 was Henry's last day in the shelter and his first day in his forever home. A wonderful couple with two young children recently lost their labrador retriever. They came to the shelter looking for a new member of their family and a companion for their Brittany Spaniel. They decided that Henry would be the perfect fit for them. Welcome Home Henry!

In Loving Memory...

In Loving Memory...

Unfortunately our sweet Delilah never found her forever family. Delilah died in the shelter because of neglect. Her previous owners never spayed her. This is why she was found roaming the streets and brought to the shelter. Her previous owners didn't care enough about her to come and find her. Her previous owners didn't keep her up to date on her vaccinations, and because of this, Delilah came down with a nasty case of Kennel Cough and was euthanized.

Delilah's story shows how important it is to spay/neuter your dog and keep them current on vaccinations. Her previous owners will never know the consequences of their neglect. They will probably never consider or care about her fate.

We are heartbroken for this sweet and loving girl. She deserved so much better. Delilah, we will carry your memory in our hearts.

Welcome Home Phantom!

RESCUE ME
Welcome Home Phantom!

Phantom was adopted on October 8, 2009! Thank you Georgia for opening your heart and your home and giving Phantom a second chance. We are certain that Phantom will have a great time playing with his new Mastiff sister! Welcome Home Phantom!

Devin is Safe but Not Yet Home

SAFE BUT NOT HOME

The time alloted for Devin was up, but this fun loving dog got a much deserved break. CAWS - Community Animal Welfare Society took Devin into their care. Devin will be in foster care until his forever home is found. He is safe, but not yet home. PLEASE open your heart to this terrific dog. Contact CAWS for more information on Devin and to arrange a time to meet him.

Welcome Home Ranger

RESCUE ME
Welcome Home Ranger!

Ranger was adopted on September 3, 2009! A young couple fell in love with Ranger and decided that he was the perfect dog for them. Welcome Home Ranger!

Welcome Home Kinsey!

RESCUE ME
Welcome Home Kinsey!

Kinsey was adopted on August 21, 2009! She is a lucky dog who has a long happy life ahead of her. Welcome Home Kinsey!

Welcome Home Maggie!

RESCUE ME
Welcome Home Maggie!

Maggie was adopted on August 5, 2009! It was a close call for Maggie. She was scheduled to be euthanized when one of the shelter workers decided that she just couldn't let that happen to such a special dog. Instead of Wednesday being her last day on this planet, it was Maggies first day in her forever home. Welcome Home Maggie!
