Training your Dog to Sit
A Must for Good Manners
Training your dog to sit is easy and simple. Sit is one of the first basic obedience commands your dog should know. A well mannered dog knows will instantly sit when asked. Your dog should sit patiently to wait for his dinner. He should sit when offered treats or when offered pats from strangers.
Steps for Teaching Your Dog to Sit
1. To begin, face your dog.
2. Put a dime size or smaller tasty treat between your first and index fingers.
3. Turn your palm up and show the dog you have a treat.
4. Take your hand, palm up and move your hand with the treat from the dogs nose over his head. The act of looking up at the treat so close to him will usually cause the dog to sit.
5. The moment the dogs' behind hits the floor, praise him with your positive word and give him the treat.
6. If the dog does not sit on the first attempt, take the treat away for a moment and try once again.
7. As your dog gets better with the treat lure, begin by using the
sit hand signal
. Place your palm up in front of the dog. When he sits, offer the treat.
8. To teach your dog the verbal command, “sit”, start saying the word while giving the hand signal. Only say the word once and only begin saying it once the dog is consistently sitting with the hand signal.
A dog can learn sit in just a couple of minutes. Once the dog knows sit, incorporate the command into his daily routine to reinforce the behavior. Have the dog sit before going out the door for a walk. Sit before he gets fed. Sit before getting pets from strangers.
Use this command in your daily routine and your dog will be on his way to becoming a happy and well mannered member of your household.
